So hey, currently typing my way through the first batch of results and figures I would share some thoughts on the fed that I occur as I brainstorm and write out the lead up to what I think will be a very fun PPV coming in late November/early December. Nothing official, but something to maybe start a discussion or two.
-So ...a few weeks ago, when I first opened the fed, a caught a sub-tweet from someone I didn't know take what I think might have been a shot at the concept of this fed. I'm not sure. Could've just been a shot at feds that takes days and weeks to get results up in general. Anyways, the tweet went something like "while other feds want to take weeks to put up results, here mine are right now." And honestly, good for that person for being able to do results weekly or bi-weekly. But here is my thing with my fed concept and whatnot: you don't know what works until you try it out. I had an idea for something that, yes, requires a bit of patience on the part of handlers and myself, but a system that I haven't seen used as of yet. It also is a system that allows me to not only put out quality results, but allows me to properly pace out storylines and not just write episode to episode. Also, I'm sorry, there are just days where I don't want my life to be e-fedding and this prevents me from burning out. That burn out is why we see a lot of monthly feds, summary results feds, or feds that can't get results up on time. Hell, it is why sometime in the early 10's, bi-weekly started being used more commonly for fed heads. I respect people who can do results on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. More power to them and their staff, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't go trying other avenues to keep up quality of said results. I just don't think there needs to be uniform way to fed that I see some people trying to push on twitter and if you don't fall into it, you are somehow "doing it wrong." I HATED that when it came to people talking about what an RP should or should not be, and I certainly don't like it when it is applied to what makes a good fed. What makes a good fed is the happiness and productivity of the handlers, not if it falls into the unsaid rules of what a fed should be.
-In the same vein, and I don't know how this is going to be received (it might be salty), I opened this place because I wasn't satisfied with a lot of the booking and results I have seen over the last few years. Again, if handlers of feds are happy and being productive, my opinion on their fed doesn't matter. But I personally found it hard to handle in feds because the results, storylines, and booking just never grabbed me. It always seemed to be "wrestler A has title, wrestler B wins number one contender match, wrestler B challenges for title, rinse wash repeat." The feuds never really seem to have a whole lot of depth or struggle and the results either didn't have segments or segments that didn't really lead to larger story. And when I was staffing places, I found it really hard to book ANYTHING more than that because some handlers don't like have their characters attacked in results ...but they also aren't setting up feuds with other handlers or sending in segments. I get the sentiment of "no attacks," because they think it makes their character look weak, but I also believe that conflict opens the door to actually develop characters and tell a story. To me, e-fedding is about trying to put out something that is equal to or even better than the current product on television. It is about creating stories and dynamics using the wrestling business as the way to tell those stories. And maybe these handlers see it the same way, but in more of a "my character needs to be Roman Reigns/ John Cena" and not in the macro sense. I don't know. I just wasn't seeing what I wanted from e-fed results personally.
It also didn't help that there were always interesting things I would see pop up on twitter that I would think could be used in results ...like inter-character relationships. What a treasure trove of storylines would those ships be if they were actually used in results and storylines between the characters. Instead of playing out in results, they play out on twitter and nowhere else. Instead of leading to a big angle on the results, they lead to a petering out into the next relationship on twitter. In one fed I was staffing for, we had two handlers whose characters were dating. I asked if we could use their relationship for a storyline that would play out over weeks, leading to developing their character giving them twitter material. They said no. I asked if they wanted to do segments together to show that the characters were dating. They said no. Then when they broke up on twitter in a huge argument, I said "HEY, lets do a huge feud from this dispute and break up," they both said that they refused to work with the other handler. So they were just put in number one contender title matches, like the rest of the roster. It just pains me to see good character material not used in results which could punch up both the quality of the results and give the characters even more ammunition.
So that is why I started up this place. Given the concept, I didn't even think for a moment that I would get as many people as I did. But it is nice to see people who are as passionate about results and seeing their character develop (not just win) as much as I am writing those moments. Now I have the opportunity to put out the type of results that I would love to read and hopefully you guys like reading them to. As always, give input, pitch ideas, and leave feedback. Let me know what you guys want to see, so I am not just writing for myself
-As you can probably tell, I'm a person who gets motivated by other people's content and characters. And that is the best way to get your character over in the storylines and what not. While yes, you CAN just watch your character progress in the fed with just filling out an application and calling it a day, it is quite hard to book a character I know nothing about. Sometimes the application is enough. Sometimes it isn't. The best way for me to push your character, is to SHOW me your character. And that could be in whatever way you see fit, be it a plotter, twitter, an RP, or a conversation on what you forsee for your character. It just makes it a lot easier for me to get excited about a character, the more I see of them. It also makes it easier to write. Abattage, Hannah with an S, Mime Maxx, and Gabrielle all put out RP's which helped define their characters a bit better for me in the last results. I think Zaibatsu just posted an excellent plotter that maybe corrected some misconceptions about the characters in the last results. Samson's great RP helped me get a longterm plan and build set up for his character and made me want to see the character succeed. Twitter can be used in the same way. Knowing how Hayley Halsey reacted to her part in the pilot, helps me nail down her path a bit better. Yes, again, you can just apply and see what I come up for your character. That is an option. But at the same time, you mean to tell me that your character was involved in a wild capture the flag for a title that spanned an entire theme park ...and they have absolutely no opinion on it? Again, you showing me your character, makes writing for them much easier and a whole lot of fun for me.
-With that said, I did want to talk about inactivity a bit. There is no "flaking" here. There are no no shows. You sign up, I'm going to use your character whether you are around or not. The concept of the fed allows that type of booking. And the type of person I am understands that sometimes people just want to check in every once in awhile to see what their character is up to. I get it and that is cool. However, there might be people who are just gone, so here is what I am going to do when it comes to that. Everybody is under contract for three cycles of tapings. I'll use them for those three cycles. If I see nothing since they signed up (or a week or so after), they'll be phased out during that third cycle. Don't worry, I'm not going to embarrass them or anything I see some feds do, but their storylines will be wrapped up. I think this is fair , but also allows for storylines to play out without interruption. However, that is only for people who vanish. If you want to leave, just tell me and we'll work on a way to write your character immediately.
That is it for my thoughts. Just wanted to get those out while I write up the results for the next few weeks.
