Hayley Halsey is in a small studio, ready to release her first promotional material for WWU. The camera lights come on and she appears to be a little bit nervous considering what she’s about to get into. Still, taking a deep breath, she’s able to compose herself and speak to the audience that’s about to watch her promo.
Hayley Halsey: Bear with me… something like this is incredibly awkward for me to do. So.. this is the part where I say “Hi, I’m Hayley and I’m a wrestleholic”... right? Ugh… anyway… you may remember me as the cute, blonde rookie that got her face beat in during WWU’s pilot episode, but… I’d like to think that she held her own in her own right also. So, there’s that I guess. But, if you’ve followed my career before WWU, you’d also remember me in this little promotion called PHW which didn’t last long, but I won all four of my matches there and in my last, I won their Pure Championship from this wrestler called Kathryn James… who all of you have probably never heard of…
...because maybe she wasn’t all that great in the first place?
Hayley sighs.
Hayley Halsey: I’m sorry, I’m still really new to this so I don’t know what else to say. I was one of the better performers in promo class during my Academy days, but doing this for real is kind of intimidating for me, you know? But yeah… so… I’m from Puyallup, Washington… which again… nobody has ever heard of and when I turned 18 and graduated high school, I moved to Seattle to train with the Seattle Wrestling Academy. I had some fun times there, especially with my two best friends. Their names were Bianca and Casey… and our most successful alumni happens to be a five-time world champion who recently became the owner slash head trainer of the school, which is AMAZING because I have such deep admiration for her but… I’m not going to brag about that because there are way too many people in wrestling these days that base their brand off of who trained them and where they trained…
And I’m not going to be one of them. Don’t get me wrong, the Academy taught me a whole lot… it’s just…
...they didn’t teach me how to deal with having thumbtacks smashed into my face, ya know?
...nor did they teach me how to deal with the emotional impact of working so hard in a wrestling company and winning your first title ever in four matches, actually beating your school’s most successful alumni in how fast such an event happened only for the roller coaster to crash and the fed to close…
...and they definitely didn’t teach me about friends suddenly turning over a new leaf… for the worst.
Hayley pauses, catching her breath for a few seconds while thinking about everything she just said.
Hayley: I’m only the third student from my Academy to hit the big time. I mean… the school’s owner did it herself 9 years ago… love you Victoria!!!! Wait… actually I’m the fourth if you count Bianca… though she did it as a non-wrestler… but anyway, my other friend Casey was the second nearly three years ago. So… Victoria… the owner of the school… has had an amazing career and is a true role model. Casey… well… I’m happy for her in the sense that she’s done so much already and recently won her first world title but… UGH… she just…. I’m sorry… it’s hard for me to say this because she turned her back on me and it sucks because we were almost like sisters. This business consumed her because she couldn’t handle the adversity.
So… obviously, I want to be a lot more like Victoria and a lot less like Casey… if that makes sense. Oh gosh… I’m just rambling, aren’t I???
Let me get right to it, okay? I may be a shrinking violet and I may not look like much… and I may have been a human porcupine at the pilot episode… and I may have been exposed to adversity I’m not used to before… and yeah… maybe I am a bit on the awkward slash shy side… but that’s not going to slow me down. This has been a dream of mine for so long and I’m not about to give it up because I’ve come too far to do just that. I almost let it go after PHW suddenly turned off the lights, but I kept on pushing and here I am… ready to make any and every opponent, every enemy, every critic and doubter that wants to overlook at me look… SO ridiculous!!!!
So… uh… bring it on, right???
Hayley stops and smiles for a bit.
Hayley Halsey: That wasn’t terrible, was it?
Cameraman: No… not terrible…
Hayley Halsey: Okay good… but I think I can do better than that!
Cameraman: You’ll be fine… just cut butterflies out of your diet, if you catch my drift…
Hayley looks a bit confused as the cameraman, who has shut off the camera by this point, walks away.
Hayley: Butterflies? Huh? OH… I get it!
She has a laugh to herself knowing what the cameraman meant as the scene comes to an end.
